ICRS joins leaders' call on Prime Minister to create socially just and green recovery from Covid-19
Anita Longley FICRS, Chair of the ICRSAt the ICRS we believe that it’s more important than ever to collaborate across sectors to deliver an equitable recovery from the global pandemic. Many of our members are working hard to deliver the SDGs and we encourage the Government to use the framework as the foundation for a fairer, greener and more resilient economy.
A letter coordinated by the UK Stakeholders for Sustainable Development (UKSSD) and the United Nations Global Compact Network UK (GCN UK) has been sent to the Prime Minister today. The letter calls on the current government to use the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to guide and frame Covid-19 recovery plans.
The ICRS is proud to be joining the ranks of more than 100 companies, charities, universities and trade associations in being a signatory to this letter.
Why is this important?
The SDGs are vital in guiding us towards a just, greener and more equitable future. The recent pandemic has caused worldwide job losses, and it is feared that it may also have stalled the global momentum in lowering carbon emissions. The SDGs help mitigate both of these issues: early evidence from the Business and Sustainable Development Commission have showed that, if implemented properly, the SDGs could create at least US$12tn in business oppurtunities within some market hotspots. This number is estimated to triple when the entire economy is considered. The SDGs can also help build robust policies to create a healthier planet and guide countries towards net zero.
We must Build Back Better if we are to recover from the pandemic and build a better future where all people in the country have a good life on a healthy planet. The SDGs can help us to do this and there is already widespread support across UK society, including the business community, for the future the global goals define.
