Member Insights: Why join the ICRS Mentoring programme as a mentee? - 2024
Hajrah Iqbal is Corporate Sustainability - Communication and Administration Officer at Investec
What motivated you to apply to this program?
I have never had a mentor and as I have moved on in my career there have been suggestions from colleagues and managers that I would benefit from having one. I did some real soul searching and found that there are a lot of questions and thoughts that would be easier to discuss if I had someone who was further on in their career, more experienced and outside of my organisation, this is what led me to apply for the ICRS mentorship programme.
What are the benefits and challenges of being a mentee?
Being a mentee is highly beneficial because the focus is on your development and the mentor is there to support you in overcoming challenges and on your career journey. However, it can be challenging to be completely honest and open about your struggles. It's important to share difficulties with your mentor, as they can only help you with what information you provide them with.
How has your mentor helped you achieve your goals?
My mentor has provided a valuable platform for me to ask questions that I wouldn't feel comfortable asking anyone else. They have also served as a sounding board and helped me set goals, something I had never done before. I struggled with setting long-term career goals but having someone who can help you unpick your thoughts and struggles is very helpful when deciding on your next steps. With their support, I was able to think deeply about what I actually want to achieve.
What are some of the key lessons or insights you have learned from being a mentee?
Being a mentee has provided me with valuable lessons and insights. I have learned the importance of seeking guidance and support from someone more experienced and that it’s ok to ask questions. My mentor has shared their knowledge and expertise, helping me navigate challenges and make the best decisions. Secondly, I have realised the significance of open and honest communication. By being transparent about my struggles and aspirations, I have been able to receive personalised guidance and advice. Lastly, I have learned the value of goal-setting and self-reflection. Through discussions with my mentor, I have been able to set clear objectives and regularly evaluate my progress towards achieving them. Overall, being a mentee has taught me the importance of continuous learning and personal development.
What have you enjoyed about the program?
The one-to-one conversations have been helpful as I have been able to bring topics to the discussion which I did not feel comfortable bringing to anyone with who I work within my team and I was able to build a trusting relationship with my mentor.
What advice would you give someone who is looking to apply for the ICRS mentoring programme?
I would recommend the program. You just need to make sure you have the time to fully engage with the opportunity and develop a strong relationship with your mentor and that you have thought about what you want to achieve from the mentorship. Remember, your mentor is generously offering their free time to help you grow.
